Well, I started this quiet time by one of my mom's blogging friends...it's her trial run of her devotion book that she's writing. Today was day 2, and it was about how staying in the Word isn't just supposed to be something you check off of your "I'm-a-good-Christian" checklist. One of the passages was in Deuteronomy, and I really liked it a lot.
A little background information: this part of the chapter in Deuteronomy details the king's required duties. The king was to be chosen by God and the Israelites were to obey him and observe how he acted.
...When he sits on the throne as king he must copy these laws on a scroll for himself in the presence of the Levitical priests. He must always keep this copy of the law with him and read it daily as long as he lives. That way, he will learn to fear the LORD his God by obeying all the terms of this law. This regular reading will prevent him from becoming proud and acting as if he is above his fellow citizens. It will also prevent him from turning away from these commands in the smallest way...
Deuteronomy 17:18-20a
Wow. This is the same principle we've been taught since we were little. That's why we memorize Scripture. That's why we read the Bible. The king wasn't supposed to be "above" everyone else. He was just the leader. He was fit to be leader because he was chosen by God (like those of us who are saved) and because he would constantly be reading the laws that he was supposed to upkeep.
It would prevent him from becoming proud and haughty. It would ensure that he would always be following the right thing to do. It would mean that he had no excuse for doing something wrong because he knew what the right actions were, because he was reading them every day.
Obviously, we are all sinners. We can't keep the whole law. If we could, then Jesus wouldn't have had to come to die for our sins. This is what Dr. Brunson was talking about last night. The law was made to give us guidance, fellowship, produce guilt and understanding and most of all, to illuminate God. Our God isn't like the gods of Greek mythology. He's holy and moral and GOOD, and His desire is that we be like Him. How can we begin to know Him if we don't ever read His Word?

beautifully said! Praying His Word will illuminate to you more than ever before! Praying you will continue to know Him more as you go through the study. :)
Blessings,

Well put, Rina :) It's so true that reading God's word causes us to be less proud and self-centered. I know in my life, God uses His word and law to convict me, especially at times when I feel the most righteous. It's God's way of saying that, though I occasionally do things that bring glory to Him, I'm still a sinner and I still desperately need Him. Thanks for the blog, keep it up :)
