No, this is not about the Katy Perry song. This idea actually came to me last Saturday when I was helping at the Trinity Rescue Mission thanks to my cousin, Sophie.
Revelation 3:15-16
"I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. And because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth."
At the Trinity Rescue Mission, we normally help make and serve lunch. In between feeding the men's side of the shelter and the women's side of the shelter, we have to clean the lunch room. Sophie and I were assigned the task of wiping down the tables. We got into a discussion about how hot water kills germs and so does cold water, but lukewarm water cultivates them.
Every rule that God sets out in the Bible is for our benefit. Why does He wants us to be hot or cold? Think of sin as bacteria - it grows in lukewarm water. God calls us to be hot or cold. He said that He's going to throw us up if we're lukewarm. Why would you want to be God's vomit?
His desire is for us to be close to Him. He can't be in the presence of sin (Isaiah 59:2), and when we allow ourselves to be lukewarm (rather than being hot or cold), we allow sin to cultivate in our lives. We become desensitized to sin, not recognizing it for what it is - something that separates us from God.
Go be hot or cold.
